Assessment Report: Jake Jennings – 2016-08-19

This was Jake’s assessment at the conclusion of our Summer Offseason Training Program. He first ran this assessment in our first session together on 12/01/2015. His improvement in fundamental movements and across all dimensions of strength, speed, and agility have improved tremendously over the course of those 8 months.

In the report below, you will find breakdowns and visual analysis of the “Big 5” movement assessment that helps evaluate overall movement, strength, balance, and coordination.

In the bottom section (“Dynamic Assessments”) you will find the results of the more dynamic exercises and drills. While the “Big 5” movement screen is a strong indicator of fundamental and underlying contributors to speed and strength, these dynamic drills and tests are more literal translations of his capabilities in game scenarios.

“Big 5” Movement Assessment

Overhead Squats

Attribute Score Comments
Spinal Posture 3 Slight over-arching at lower back
Shoulder Mobility 3 Much better, shoulders not falling as far forward during squat
Movement Sequencing 4 Good hip hinge, improved strength and flexibility for deeper squat.
Knee Alignment 4 Good vertical alignment, only adjustment would be to go slightly deeper.
Heels Loaded 3 Good, but weight shifted too far back so toes are coming up.

Dynamic Assessments

Standing Long Jump

This test is used to assess power and explosiveness. Jake’s strength and explosive power have improved by over 22%, adding a full 20 inches to his standing long jump!

Rotational Medicine Ball Toss

The rotational medicine ball toss measures strength and rotational power. The better an athlete is at coordinating their lower body with their upper body through their hips, the greater rotational power they can demonstrate. Additionally, the stronger their core is, the more strength they have on hand to execute the movement powerfully. Jake improved by over 5 feet on his right side (a 15.7% improvement) and he has brought his left side almost even with it, improving by 4’9″ (14.7%).

T-Agility Drill

This agility test allows us to measure and observe acceleration, deceleration, change of direction as well as both linear and lateral speed. As the illustration to the right shows, in this test the athletes sprint 10 yards, then shuffle laterally 5 yards, cut back and shuffle in the other direction 10 yards, cut again and shuffle back to the middle, then finally backpedal to the finish line.

Jake’s improvement here has been remarkable. From improved acceleration and change of direction mechanics to improved overall speed, he has improved by nearly 3.5 seconds – over 25% – when initiating in each direction. This has clear implications for game scenarios.

20 and 40 yard Sprint

This sprint allows us to observe and measure technique, acceleration, top speed, and speed endurance. Jake’s technique and acceleration have improved significantly (11.1%, as show in the improvement over the first 20 yards), and his overall time on the sprint improved as well (7.2%), dropping almost a half second off his 40yd time.
